My Father: The Unsung Hero!

My father is a seafarer. Their vessel travels from far corners of the world. It was a well paying job however we do not get the chance to be with him always. His income gave us the taste of good life. Well let me tell you of a story which will change our lives forever. It was not published in any newspaper or a topic of news report.

However it was three years ago in Canada when that event happened. It was not his duty, but he had a habit to check the engine of the ship. He told the on duty seafarer to watch out for the temperature otherwise the ship will explode. It was just a split second that after he warned the other seaman about the temperature, the engine exploded. He got a third degree burn and was rushed to the nearest Canadian Hospital.

We received compensation but I think it was not enough. My father’s life is worth more than any compensation. But we are just thankful that he survived the accident. It was that event that led us to be more appreciative of the moments we spend together as family. I know he deserve to be called a hero, for without him his other co-workers may have suffered a tragic end. He sacrificed his safety by trying to put the fire out and by turning the engine off.

When he arrived in our country, I gave him a big hug and kiss. I also made a good gift to make him feel better. It was personalized wood signs with words expressing how I feel like “I love you” and “Get Well Soon”. I know that it helped him a lot to fully recover. I know that I have to be strong for him during those times. We have to be positive that he will still recover from such a traumatic experience.

However, I just feel bad for the company where my father works instead of helping us with the medical expenses they still deprived my father of other benefits. We have to file a case and go through series of court hearings. We even paid the lawyer more. That’s the reason why I decided to take law. I want to help the victims of unfair labor practice and maltreatment of employers who cannot pay for good services. I firmly believe that they are those who really need protection from unfair employers. They are indeed the unsung heroes of our country.
